Only began rowing in 2004 when he came to Oxford but has always been
involved in sport and competed at triathlon for eight years. Represented
Australia at the world Duathlon Championships and won the South Australian
under 23 Championships in Triathlon and Duathlon. After arriving at Oxford
he decided to take up rowing. With Magdalen college he went on to win the
Oxford Novice Regatta in 2004 and the summer eights Head of the River in
2005. Back in Australia, Phillip used to play Aussie Rules Football, he
played in the Oxford V Cambridge Varsity Aussie Rules match in 2004; his
brother also played amateur Aussie Rules back in Australia for Glenelg.
