Cambridge cox Russ Glenn is determined to put the disappointment of losing
his Varsity boxing match behind him by coxing the Light Blues to victory in
the 2007 Boat Race, sponsored by Xchanging.
Glenn from Palo Alto in California, lost his featherweight bout in the
100th Varsity boxing match despite the support of his Boat Race crew.
"It was the most terrible but amazing six minutes of my sporting
career," he said.
"The guys love the fact that I was boxing, they were excited and
nervous and wanted to see me do well."
It’s been difficult to find time for both sports, but with the help
of his supervisor in the Oriental Studies department he’s been
dashing from outings to boxing practice.
"Boxing teaches you a lot about aggression, tenacity, mindset, and
rowing teaches you about economy of effort," he said.
Now his boxing team-mates will be amongst the huge crowds on the towpath on
April 7th to see if he can get revenge for defeat in the ring.
Glenn coxed Goldie in 2005 and 2006 but admits he is still learning about
the Thames.
"You learn something new every time. It is a crazy river and with all
the changes in conditions, it is possible for the cox to make much more of
a difference."
"The experience of racing with Goldie will help in the moments before
the start. Once the race gets underway though, it is a wall of noise."
